MICHAEL K. ACKLAND, M.D.
Dr. Ackland is a sports medicine specialist who concentrates his surgery on complex problems of the
knee and shoulder. He specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder as well as sports-related injuries. Currently, Dr. Ackland is one of an elite group of
surgeons in Massachusetts performing cartilage transplants in the knee.
Dr. Ackland performed his medical school and orthopedic residence training in Ottawa, Canada, and at the University of Toronto. He received his fellowship in the
prestigious Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has published his research in the Journal
of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics. His research awards include the Keon Award for first place in orthopedic research as well as the
Academic Resident Award for Best Research Paper. He dedicates much of his time as an active member of numerous orthopedic and sports medicine societies including the
American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. As an avid leader in orthopedic surgery, he serves as the Orthopedic Instructor for Yale University and Ross medical students,
who perform regular rotations at Ackland Sports Medicine.
He has served as chief of orthopedics, president of the Leeds-Grenville Medical Society, and founder of the Ackland Sports Medicine Foundation, a charitable organization
that raises, contributes and funds young athletes in need of financial assistance to play sports.
Dr. Ackland is a member of the Department of Sports Medicine at New England Baptist Hospital. Should surgery be necessary, you may choose to have it performed in Boston
or Sandwich.
Dr. Ackland has served as orthopedic consultant to the Senior Pro Tennis Tour. His patients include professional hockey players from the NHL, Olympic athletes,
professional golfers, and is team physician for the Cape Cod Baseball League.
As a Sports Medicine provider for all levels of ages, athletes and active adults, he contributes much of his time to educational lectures, medical presentations, and
drunk driving prevention programs for local schools.
